Major Beliefs:

  • In the Judaism religion, they believe that there is one god. Jews think that Jesus is a great moral teacher.
  • The 613 commandments of Leviticus control all aspects of Jewish life. Also, Jews believe that The Messiah, which is the anointed one of God, will later on bring the Jews back to Israel one last time and resurrection of the dead will happen at this time.
  • Next, when a boy reaches 13, they have a Bar Mitzvah. At the age of 12 for girls, they have a Bat Mitzvah. At this age for both girls and boys, they are identified as adults and are responsible to follow Jewish commandments and laws.
  • They can also marry at this age, but the proper age to marry would be 18 to 24 years old. In the Jewish culture on Sabbath, which is Saturday they have a holy day of rest. Sabbath begins friday at sunset.
  • On Sabbath they eat more relaxed, get together with family to enjoy each other's company and rest up for the next week.

Lifestyle Norms:
  • The day begins with a prayer. This is the first thought of the day. The prayer is about God's presence in their life.
  • After the prayers, they go to the study hall and learn about the Torah.
  • Lastly, after study time they go about their day as a regular individual.

Terrorist Attacks

  • A lot of small Jewish groups have been connected with terrorist attacks against Arabs in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
  • None of the attacks have created a big security problem to the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) since 1988.
  • The most popular organization is the Gush Emunim Underground (It is also called the Jewish Terror Organization).
  • It was created in 1979 by members of The Gush Emunim which were religious zealots who used squatter tactics to bring a campaign to settle the West Bank (An area between Israel and Jordan) after the October 1973 War.
  • The terrorist actions of the Gush Emunim Underground were carried out between 1980 and 1984.
  • In 1980 5 car bombings against West Bank Arab mayors resulted in crippling two of the mayors.
  • In 1983, the Hebron Islamic College was the target of a machine gun and grenade attack that killed three Arab students and 33 others were wounded.
  • In 1984 an attempt was made to place explosives on five Arab buses in East Jerusalem.
  • This event was prevented by agents of Israel's internal security force. Shin Bet, leading to arrest and prison sentences for eighteen members of the underground.
  • The security services also revealed a greatly planned idea to blow up the Dome of the Rock. (one of Islam's most sacred shrines, on Jerusalem's Temple Mount).

Impact on the Middle East

  • Tension and conflicts between the Arab people of the Middle East and the Jewish community of Israel that have lasted for over a century.
  • Some people think the beginning of the conflict started with Jewish immigration to Palestine.
  • This was after the establishment of the Zionist movement.
  • It was intense with the creation of the modern State of Israel in 1948.
  • This territory was mentioned by the Jewish people as their historical homeland and by the Pan-Arab movement belonging to the Palestinians in Muslim Land.
  • The conflict started as a political and nationalist conflict over competing for the territory following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire (a Turkish empire of southwestern Asia and northeastern Africa and southeastern Europe and was created by the Ottoman Turks in the 13th century and it lasted until the end of World War I).
  • The main problem started with territory control and the US is getting involved today.

Conflicts from the practice of Judaism
  • During a peaceful protest at the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Israeli task forces used extreme force causing seven civilians to get injured. Two of which were children. Also, the tear gas inhalation effected dozens of demonstrators. Only two activists were arrested during the protest.
  • Palestinian workers and farmers were continuously fired at in border areas of the Gaza Strip. Two children were seriously injured.
  • In Palestinian communities in the West Bank, Israeli police conducted twenty-one incursions. Twenty-three people were arrested. Seven of those twenty-three were children.
  • During the creation of a Jewish demographic majority in Jerusalem, Israeli police forced a man to demolish his house along with all his belongings.
  • Settlement activities have been continued in the West Bank, Also Palestinian civilians and property continue to be attacked by Israeli settlers.


Population

  • Judaism population- the Jewish people are now split up in the U.S. and Israel.

  • There is more then five million Jewish people left in Israel.

  • There is only a several hundred less in the U.S.A.then Israel.

  • Over 40% of Jewish people live the the United States.

  • Many people that are Jewish do not study Judaism at all.

  • More then half the Jews call themselves secular or don't believe is and of the beliefs of Judaism at all.

  • There is a total of 13 million Jews in the world (2006)

Discrimination

Judaism discrimination-

Some people think that the discrimination of Jews for being rich an powerful led to discrimination.

The discrimination of Jews have mostly been by the Christian religion because they believe that the Jewish people have killed Jesus Christ.

The bible says that the Jewish people handed Jesus over to the Romans but did not kill him themselves.
